An 82 year old man has been rescued by police and local leaders from an angry mob in Itibo Village, Kisii County, after residents accused him of practicing witchcraft.
According to a report with the local police,the incident was reported today Bogiakumu Sub-location Assistant Chief Robin Nyamenya.
The elderly suspect, identified was targeted by members of the public who claimed he had bewitched his brother’s daughter, a 23 year old fourth year student at Pwani University.
The student is reportedly admitted at Nyangena Hospital undergoing treatment.
Police officers drawn from Gesonso and Suneka police stations rushed to Itibo Village where they found a hostile crowd threatening to lynch the suspect.
The situation was calmed following intervention by area nominated MCA Redemter Moraa alongside local elders, allowing officers to safely rescue and escort the elderly man to Gesonso Police Station for his safety.
Security officers have since been deployed to guard the suspect’s home amid fears of possible retaliation or destruction of property.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing as the case remains under probe at Gesonso Police Station.
