A 40 year old woman has died in hospital after she was found unconscious with injuries in what police are investigating as a suspected rape and murder in Awendo, Migori County.

The victim, identified as ROA, was discovered by police officers on routine patrol at Kokuro Village in North Kombok Sub-location on Monday at around 12.15pm.

She was lying outside the perimeter wall of the residence of Prof. Paul Oyia, where she had reportedly attended a house-warming ceremony.

Police said the woman had sustained a head injury and was struggling to breathe when she was found.

Her underwear had been pulled down to her knees, while her sandals were lying nearby, raising suspicions of a sexual assault.

She was rushed to Rapcom Hospital in Awendo for emergency treatment but succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention.

Officers who processed the scene noted signs of a struggle and recovered two empty packets of “Sure” condoms believed to be relevant to the investigation.

The body has been preserved at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Awendo have launched investigations into the incident as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the suspected rape and killing.
