A leadership dispute at Faza Jamia Mosque in Lamu East turned tragic after a confrontation during today’s afternoon prayers left one man dead and two suspects in police custody.
According to a report filed at at Faza Police Station, the incident occurred at around 12:45 pm inside the mosque during Thuhuri prayers.
Police said the deceased, identified as Khalid Abdu Maka, 33 became involved in a scuffle with two men who allegedly attempted to force him out of the mosque.
During the confrontation, one suspect, Mohamed Basho Mbwana, reportedly restrained the victim from behind while the second suspect, Feisal Bwanakombo Sivi allegedly stabbed him on the right side of the neck.
The victim sustained a deep wound near the collar bone and another deep cut on the left wrist.
He was rushed to Faza Sub-County Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers later arrested the two suspects in separate operations.
Sivi was reportedly found hiding in his bathroom while allegedly attempting to dispose of the suspected murder weapon in a toilet.
Officers recovered the weapon together with blood stained clothes believed to have been worn during the attack.
The second suspect, Mbwana was arrested while allegedly hiding in a bedroom at his home.
Investigators believe the killing was linked to a disagreement over the management of Faza Jamia Mosque.
Police confirmed that a postmortem examination had been conducted before the body was released to family members for burial.
