A 37 year old man has tragically lost his life after accidentally falling into a deep septic tank while draining stagnant water in Malaa, Matungulu, Machakos County.
According to a police report filed at KBC Police Station the incident was reported at around 2:00 p.m. by Evans Nyasani Areba, a resident of Afya Phase One Estate in Malaa.
The deceased, identified as James Kariuku Maina, had reportedly been casually hired earlier in the day to drain water from a newly constructed waste organic pit septic tank that had filled with rainwater during the rainy season.
Police said that at around 9:00 a.m., while using a generator pump to drain the water, Maina accidentally slipped and fell into the 18-foot-deep concrete-built tank where he drowned.
Officers from KBC Police Station and detectives from Matungulu Sub-County visited the scene and, with the assistance of members of the public, managed to retrieve the body from the septic tank.
Preliminary examination revealed no visible physical injuries on the body.
After documentation and other necessary procedures, the body was moved to Kangundo Sub-County Level 4 Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the OCSKBC handling the case.
